Barborka (St. Barbara day ), 4th December
Barborka also known as Saint Barbara day is a polish celebration that takes place to commemorate miners and the mining industry in Poland, as mining has always been known for its dangerous nature, being a miner was seen as quite a prestigious position in society. In Wroclaw this tradition is highly celebrated, by students (who look for any excuse to throw a party), children, parents, employees, employers and many more, in general it is celebrated by pretty much anyone. In the city of Wroclaw, during Barborka, you can expect a huge party in the rynek (city centre) which usually comprises of lots of traditional wooden stalls selling all sorts of odds and sods, ranging from mountain style clothing and hats, to mountain style smoked cheeses, to hot traditional polish meals such as Golonko, sausages, soups and so forth and so on. And as if that wasn't enough of an attraction there is usually also a large stage set up where you can expect to observe, chill out or get completely crazy with Poland's top musical talents, and who knows, you might even just get seen on TV as the whole festival is filmed and broad casted on polish television. If you do get a bit cold, and the hot drinks and food from the wooden stalls isn't quite enough to keep you warm through out the duration of the festival/concert, then simply pop into one of the bars of restaurants in the city center and order a Grzaniec ( warm spiced red wine with a hint of orange) or Grzane piwo ( warm beer usually spiced with ginger or cinnamon, depending on the menu), throw that down the hatch and off you return to the festival/concert all warmed up and ready to enjoy the rest of the night.
Young or old, i highly recommend everyone to pull through to Wroclaw during this festival to experience it first hand.
